Global Social Media Statistics

Kepios research suggests that there were more than 4.62 billion people using social media across the globe in January 2022. This represents 58.4 percent of the world's population.

The number of people using social media has seen an increase of over the past 12 months also, with 424 million users joining social media since the beginning of the year.

Recent data show that over 9 out (10 internet users) are using social media each monthly (learn more details about larger web-related behavior by visiting this Global Digital Overview page).

This amounts to an annualized increase of 10.1 percent, which is equivalent to an average of more than thirteen users every second.

However, you should be aware that the numbers for social media users could not reflect distinct individuals due to problems like duplicate accounts through Inflact The social media users' numbers may be greater than the numbers we release on behalf of internet users or even the entire population.

It's also important to remember that measuring the number of people who use on social media with the overall population may not accurately reflect the use of social media because most social media firms restrict their services to those who are 13 or older.

For some context, the most recent data suggests that the number of users of social media across the world is now over 75 percent of the global population who are eligible to be a component of.

The information from GWI indicates that the average social media user uses or surfs 7.5 different social networks every month. They also spend about 2 1/2 hours per day using social media.

If we assume that individuals are sleeping between 7 and 8 hours a day, these figures indicate that people spend about 15 percent of their daily lives using social media.

Together, we spend over 10 billion hours of social networks each day. That's equivalent to 1.2 million years of human life.

Audience overlaps

The numbers of users on these platforms give a convincing story of the growing popularity of social media around the world, however by them themselves, they don't provide the complete picture.

The global population of connected people is making use of various social networks every month, which means there is a lot of similarities between the users and the audience for ads across all platforms.

The graph below shows the amount of overlap using the most recent information from GWI providing valuable information to anyone looking to develop an online marketing mix, or a digital strategy for advertising.

The most significant takeaway from this research is that marketers don't need to be on every platform simultaneously to be able to reach their biggest potential audience.

If reaching is your primary objective, then you must focus on a handful of most popular platforms, ensuring that you'll be able to reach out to the majority of social media users.

Reach isn't the only thing to take into consideration when developing an effective marketing plan, obviously, this data can help us reconsider the way we design the mixture of platforms for social media.

For instance, various users might use different platforms due to various reasons, therefore it is important to look at the requirements of their customers to identify the best platforms appropriate for specific campaigns and objectives.

The graph below gives excellent insight into the motivations the reasons people use social media. However, keep in mind that the motives for users can differ depending on the country as well as age, and the platform used, so be sure to check the market data for your local area and also.

Social media preferences

It's important to remember that the amount of users that are popular does not necessarily mean they're more popular.

The information obtained from GWI will allow us to make sense of which platforms people are interested in the most and the graph below shows the general preferences of social media platforms around the world.

As you might expect, the preferences of individuals differ with respect to gender and age.

As you can see in the graph below, the study by GWI indicates that younger users are more likely to more frequently say that they consider Instagram is the "favourite" online social network (at at the very minimum in a lot of Western markets) While older generations tend to be more likely to use Facebook and WhatsApp.

However, there are substantial differences in these preferences on the individual level. These local variations are particularly important for businesses trying to reach the right audience at the right place at the right timing.

Social media behavior in different countries

As you've observed in the past, the user-friendly features of social media platforms vary between countries and that's why it is crucial to study the data to discover the patterns on a local scale.

Notes:

(a) (a) In the event that platforms release only daily active user counts or don't have the most recent updates on the number of active monthly users. We've used the most current figures for the reach of advertising that are released by the self-service tools of each platform for advertising, to provide a comparable base to compare.

(b) (b) (b) (b) websites haven't released any up-to-date information on their users over the past 12 months, so the numbers for the users we've included here aren't as accurate as those we've included on other platforms in this list.

LinkedIn has discontinued publishing monthly active user counts and its monthly advertising reach numbers are based on number of registered members instead of monthly active users (MAUs). This makes it difficult to figure out the amount of users active LinkedIn has each month. Our analysis suggests that LinkedIn does not have enough users to qualify for the top position in the rankings above.

Please be aware that we have included the number of active users per month and potential reach of advertising figures for various websites on the social media in our analysis. Make sure to go through each slide to find out about the metrics we've used for each platform
